When my clients ask me how I'll support them during labour and birth, I often start with the tangible ways I show up: helping create your ideal birth environment, ensuring you understand what's happening, advocating for your wishes, coaching you through your chosen pain management techniques, and reminding you of your intuition and strength.
But here's what makes my 'continuum style' of doula support different: by the time your labour arrives, the support I am able to give you will feel seamless and intuitive, and will be tailored specifically to you and your birth partner.
Creating a trusting relationship during six antenatal visits
This personalised support doesn't happen by accident. Through our six antenatal visits together, we'll have built a deep understanding of your hopes, fears, preferences, and unique needs. I'll have learned how you respond to stress, what brings you comfort, and how you and your partner work best as a team. When labour begins, I won't be a stranger offering generic support – I'll be someone who truly knows you, ready to provide exactly the type of encouragement and assistance that resonates with you personally.
During labour, I see myself as a valued member of your birth team. I'm constantly looking for opportunities to provide physical and emotional comfort, regardless of which stage of labour you're experiencing. My role is to support both you and your partner, allowing you to focus on each other and the incredible work of bringing your baby into the world.
I serve as a bridge between you and your medical team, helping ensure you feel informed and comfortable with decisions as they unfold. I have deep respect for medical professionals and their expertise, and I understand my boundaries as a doula. My focus remains on ensuring you feel heard, supported, and confident in your choices.
Comfort and support tools
One of the practical benefits of my experience is that I can suggest comfort measures in the moment, so you don't have to remember everything while navigating the sensations of labour. My doula bag is packed with carefully selected tools to support you in whatever birthing environment you have chosen. Some examples include:
battery-operated tea lights to create gentle lighting
heat packs for comfort and pain relief
printed birth affirmation cards with your personal mantras
birth combs for acupressure during contractions
aromatherapy oils for relaxation
a hand-held fan to cool you when things get heated.
Many of these items might be in my client's own hospital bag – and that's perfect! Having extras means we're fully prepared for whatever your labour brings.
Your continuous birth companion
I will remain with you throughout your entire labour, birth, and immediate post-birth bonding period. If circumstances require you to transfer away from your place of birth, I will do my very best to stay by your side, ensuring continuity of support when you need it most.
Those precious first minutes after birth are irreplaceable. I'm committed to safeguarding this physiological bonding time and supporting you to establish feeding in the gentle, protected space your new family deserves.
Deeply personal, intuitive care
What truly sets this support apart is the relationship we'll have built together. Through our antenatal visits, I'll understand your communication style, your coping mechanisms, and the specific ways you find strength. When labour intensifies, I'll know instinctively how to help you refocus, when to suggest a position change, or how to remind you of your power in a way that truly resonates.
This isn't about following a standard 'doula checklist' – it's about providing deeply personal, intuitive support that feels like a natural extension of your own inner wisdom and strength.
Your birth experience deserves this level of personalised care and attention. Together, we'll create the foundation for a confident, supported birth that honours your unique journey into parenthood.
